  • Starting salaries for legal professionals increased by an average of 20% or more than expected
  • Law Firms requiring employees to return to the office, 5 days a week, facing hiring and talent retention challenges
  • Paid leave benefits, in particular, parental leave top-up plans, are becoming an increasingly important consideration for professionals
  • Employer branding now a key factor for employers looking to attract top legal talent

Vancouver, BC, June 2, 2022 – The race for talent in the legal industry remains extremely high as law firms are having to pull out all the stops to stand out in a relentlessly competitive candidate-driven market. Legal professionals continue to actively seek higher compensation, additional benefits and perks as well as work-life balance from employers.

Based on a recent poll conducted by Impact Recruitment, 24% of candidates consider flexibility and remote work options to be the most important benefit offered by an employer, aside from monetary compensation itself. Law firms offering flexible work arrangements including hybrid or remote work options, flexible start and finish times, or shorter workweeks are having more success attracting and retaining talent over their competitors.

In addition, firms providing paid leave benefits, in particular, parental leave top-up plans, are coming out ahead, as legal professionals increasingly consider these perks an important consideration when deciding to make a career move.

Impact, a leading multi-disciplinary recruitment firm, launches the 2022 Salary Guide: Law Firm Edition for the Greater Vancouver area to highlight these current legal industry hiring trends as well as provide up-to-date salary data for lawyers and legal support professionals in the local market.

“Our legal recruitment division continues to see strong demand for lawyers and legal support professionals across Canada. Despite potential economic headwinds on the horizon, the race to attract and retain top legal talent continues,” said Jeffrey David Harris, Founder + CEO of Impact Recruitment and AmbiMi. “Now, more than ever, the ability to communicate your firm’s unique value proposition with confidence throughout the recruitment process will help set you apart from the competition. It’s clear employer branding can make or break you during the initial hiring and onboarding stage,” Harris concluded.

Employer branding has become a key factor in securing top legal professionals in Canada. In a poll conducted by Impact, almost 30% of candidates stated excellent company reputation as a key reason they would choose one employer over another when presented with multiple job offers.
